Greetings from warm, humid south Brazil!!! It is summer vacation time here! After having our traditional family time on Christmas morning, if was so nice that we decided to celebrate the day as many Brazilians do and have a cookout/picnic. John’s mother was able to be with us this year, as she is getting ready to leave for her furlough in the States beginning January 20th. Our short-termer from Grace Baptist Church in Chariton, Iowa, Bekah Hendricks, was also here for Christmas and will be staying through March. She loves snow, so it was hard for her to hear about all the snow in Iowa that she was missing. We were trying to dream up ways to make her Christmas “white,” (throwing popcorn in the air, spreading corn starch around…etc.), but decided against those. We think she enjoyed the picnic, though. She has made some good friends down here–in fact a couple of them are here from Fortaleza visiting her right now so we have a full house!! We are enjoying the extra visitors, as it is nice to have help with the ministry and also at home.

The last time we wrote we were gearing up for our Christmas program at Gato Preto, and we are glad to report that it went well…all except for the stormy downpour RIGHT at the end as John was wrapping up the Christmas message. Even the tarp that we had put up before the meeting did not keep the strong winds and rain from dampening the crowd, and we ended up quickly running for cover in the small home where we meet. There we enjoyed a time of refreshments, gift distribution (small sacks of candy for the kids and devotional books for the adults), and also inspirational special music with Orlando and Lourdes, a dear couple that has been helping us. Even though the program did not go as we had planned, it was a blessing to hear one lady say at the end that this was the best Christmas she had ever had! Also, since that night, a lady named Rose and her two children have not missed a meeting. She hasn’t accepted Christ as her Savior, but we sense she is very close to making this decision. Please pray for her salvation.

Besides our work at Gato Preto, John has had the opportunity to speak at various churches and also at a camp for Chinese adolescents. (pictured below) How awesome it has been to see the Lord work each time He opens the Word of God!

Our prayer requests are as follows:

-For Rose and others who need to be saved.
-For a place for our group in Gato Preto to meet–our land issue was put on hold until February, but a couple other options have come up.
-For our up-coming VBS in Gato Preto. (salvation of children)
-For the Carnaval events planned (retreats, special meetings…) in February.

I think not.

To acknowledge that God is sovereign over all things is thoroughly Biblical and greatly comforting for the believer in Christ. God’s sovereignty however was never meant to be a cover-up for cause and effects. There are causes and effects-in life, in politics, in nations, etc.  (Psalm 9:17; Gal. 6:7-8) To ignore these things is intellectually silly.

Where we go wrong is when we judge whether or not one person, one nation, or one group of people deserve judgment more than we do.  In Luke 13 Jesus responded to those who thought a group of Galatians who had died a hideous death had it coming by saying, “Do you think these Galatians were worse sinners than all the other Galatians, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” He then referred to another tragedy of a tower that fell down killing 18 people.  Again the prevailing belief was that somehow or another, they had it coming. To this Jesus repeated himself; “No, I tell you; that unless you repent you will all likewise perish.”

God’s earthly graces are indiscriminate, but his judgments are very discriminate. As to His graces; “For He makes His sun rise on the evil, and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”  Matt. 5:45  But note that our same God promised that in the day His Son reigns, if the Egyptian people do not honor Him, they will get no rain!.” Zech 14:18

Whenever great tragedy occurs on this earth there are a number of theological and practical truths for the follower of Christ to keep in mind.
     1. God is soveriegn. Rom. 8:28, Eph. 1:11, Ps. 115, Daniel 4:35.  This simply means that regardless whether or not we understand the reasons behind any tragedy, we can be sure God has them and furthermore, He is in complete control. 
     2. The pervasiveness of sin. Rom. 8:21-23 “The whole creation has been groaning…” The sin that we introduced into this world is the reason this world groans. And it groans through floods, hurricanes, famines and earthquakes to name a few.
     3. The justice of God. Ps. 9:17 “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all nations that forget God.” While we must not put ourselves in the place of judgment, we must acknowledge that God does judge nations in time.
     4. The promises of prophecy.  Matt. 24:4-8 The promises Jesus himself gave as the time of His return drew near included “famines and earthquakes in various places.” In other words these times should point our hearts heavenward as we look to the return of our Savior!
     5. The doctrine of responsibility. Matt. 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorifty your Father who is in heaven.” We were created for good works-Eph 2:10, and are commanded to do good works. Titus 2:7, 14, Titus 3:1, 8, 14. Followers of Christ have often and rightly been accused of being distant from such tragedies as the one in Haiti. But yet Paul reminds us in Titus that when we demonstrate good works we “adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.” Titus 3:10 I am thankful that SBC has learned to respond to these kinds of tragedies. We sent men to tsunami ridden India and to New Orleans after Katrina. We will certainly be open to what the Lord has us to do in Haiti.

The situation there is still in a state of panic. Governments from around the world are already responding and food supplies and water are getting there but the distribution of those supplies is still being organized. On top of that there is rubble everywhere. It is a dangerous place to be right now. The purpose of this email is three-fold. One, pray for the people of Haiti and the believers on the ground there. Secondly, be patient as we are investigating both the timing and the way in which we might help. Be warned, this is also a time where evil men will rise up in an effort to scam you of your monies. Lastly and speaking of money, no doubt many of you would like to give sooner than later toward this cause in Haiti. Therefore this Sunday night we will take up a special offering to that end. Perhaps by then we can share what ministry or agency we will funnel those monies through in our effort to make sure it gets directly to the people of Haiti.

My guess is that some of you are wondering what all this means from God’s perspective. I will be sending out a Behind the Scenes later on today in regards to that question.

A tale of two nights…

We were given a gift to come and housesit at a mate’s house for a summer holiday. We did get some time to relax and rest after a busy year. During that time we had friends stop by for a bbq, a swim and/or coffee throughout the stay. In a matter of two evenings we had the privilege of being part of conversations that challenged and encouraged us. The conversations also were a small glimpse into the spiritual state of Sydney.

Romans 1: 19-20

For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

We have been trying to get together with a couple in our church for months, the wife is a Christian and the husband is not. We had a bbq and had a few friends over to enjoy the beautiful day in Sydney. Conversation was on Christmas, New Year’s and the summer months. Inevitably the conversation moved to the Bible. The topic started with evolution and creation. One of the blokes there turned to our non-Christian friend and asked, “What are your thoughts on this, mate.” Everyone was expecting disagreement or even antagonism, but we all were surprised. My friend stated, “I believe that God created the world.” After a surprised pause, the guys started to ask clarifying questions and even sat down for a definition of what his views were on God. It started out encouraging and then spiraled into a fascinating, twisted, postmodern answer that had us going on for three hours on theological things. My friend went on to explain that he believed in God, respected Jesus, saw the world as God’s working hand through the tool of evolution, there is an ever after that exists for all and there is no hell, and that mankind eventually moves to a point of awareness, eventually we become gods to share in God’s existence. From that clear definition, the group had a go sharing what the Bible and what God’s word states about these points. Then he did it, he started quoting scripture. My non-Bible believing friend started coming up against their arguments with Bible passages. The passages were out of context and misapplied, but beautifully placed and it had its effect. Confusion and backpedaling by the well intentioned Christians, it quieted some of his detractors. Yet, just as Jesus did in the desert, when his word is clarified and utilised properly it is the light for the conversation.

Respectfully, it was asked of him, “Within all you have to say, what do you do with Jesus’ statement No one comes to the Father except through me.” He stated, I do not believe that portion. When asked what does he measure all of these things on, what was the standard, the measuring stick? Without any hesitation he said, “Myself and my personal study.” Things continued on for a while longer. Eventually the conversation was interrupted by darkness and exhaustion. All began to leave; my postmodern friend shook my hand and stated he had a great evening. He even text me the next day to thank us for having his family along.

Within his own definition, my friend represents a group of people, Cherry pickers. A definition that comes from the machine used to lift you to high places, usually to move where a person desires to be and to let them pick the things they desire. Cherry picking can used when considering the things of God, too. Apparatuses that lift them to heights to choose the portions of theology they like and leave the other portions to the side. If it does not fit into his basket, they throw it away.

It is fascinating that people chose to do this with God, but we would never do this with other portions of our lives. Driving: Only driving a car with the parts of the engine they prefer. Career: only do the parts of their jobs that they liked. Health: only utilize the advice of a doctor that we like for the sake of our physical existence.

If you choose to cherry pick in these portions of life, you either end up broken down on the side of the road, without a job or simply dead.

Why do people choose to do this with God? In this postmodern, western landscape, this is the mindset we see all the time. Pray that we would be able to continue with our friend and others that we come in contact with to clarify the Bible. Also, explaining that the choosing of these eternal things are not based on our own choosing, but God’s. We need to be thankful for this gift of God setting the standard.

The freed captive

Psalm 146: 7-8

The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous.

The next night one of our Urban Fight Club members brought a mate over for coffee. His friend had just been baptised and has only been a Christian for eleven months. He was excited about everything that had to do with God. The answers could not come fast enough to all of the questions. He had come from a life of hard living and the Lord had brought him to this point in his life. He loved the people of his church (not one our family works with, but we do know the church) and he looked forward to sharing all about his new life in Christ. The enthusiasm and desire of new Christians can be described as “just not able to get enough of God.” Then the conversation shifted to frustration, he was being mentored and was in the Bible consistently. Why was he frustrated? He loved his growth in Christ, but in the process he was being told that there was only one translation of the Bible that he should be reading. He loved this new life, but why the limitation on God’s Word? He had become a freed captive, moving into freedom in Christ, but a potential captive of legalism.

We went on to describe a recent encounter on this very subject. We had the privilege to hear a Christian archeologist speak a few years back and someone in the audience asked, “Which translation of the Bible do you read?” He smiled with a knowing look of a potential trap and stated, “The original Greek and Hebrew.” But, he did not leave the crowd hanging on that answer. He went on to say, “Read the Bible you are reading, as long as you are reading the Bible. You need to be in the God’s Word. That is the important part.”

This is the same advice we gave our new young Christian. He has just been set free in a new life in Christ. Why would we want to make him a captive again? Just getting someone to read the Bible is a huge barrier to overcome. We would hope to not put up unnecessary barriers to keep someone from growing in their love for God and His Word.

Tale of two friends…

Please be praying for our friends, one to be set free from the bondage of sin and the other to grow in his new freedom found in his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Also, for our work in the varying spiritual landscape of Sydney.

Praise GOD for HIS blessings here at Bet Sar Shalom. Sr. Carlos who was saved a few months ago brought a friend. His friend Fabio accepted CHRIST. Pray for Fabioand for Fulvio who will be discipling him. Last week Sr. Carlos brought his wife Cecilia. Please pray for her salvation.

Praise GOD for the special prayer meeting times we have each Tuesday evening here at Bet Sar Shalom.

Yesterday Mary and Esther came for lunch and Bible study. Mary lives out of town and is not able to come in to town very often but usually calls so that we can have Bible study. This time it worked out for Esther to come also. When Esther arrived she mentioned that her friend Sofia had just called and was going to be walking in the Mall (a half a block away) and wanted her to come. She made arrangements to go after Bible study. Sofia called again toward the end of Bible study wondering why Esther was taking so long. Mary who had been listening started to ask questions about Sofia as both have Yugoslavian background. Esther called Sofia back so that she and Mary could talk. Mary and Sofia are childhood friends whose parents were also good friends. They had not seen each other in years.

Mary could not go to the Mall as she had other things to do but we shall all be getting together one day soon. Esther was a neighbor of Sofias. When she first learned of Esther, Bet Sar Shalom, the MASHIACH and me she was very against Esther’s even coming here. I have seen Sofia several times and Esther and I have been praying for her salvation.

What fantastic things GOD does. Now Sofia has 2 Jewish friends who have accepted their MESSIAH. I went with Esther and walked with Sofia and her non Jewish friend Mina. Learning that I teach the Bible, Mina wanted to know what a Jewish person was doing teaching the Bible.

Praise God for opportunities to share HIS Word. Please pray for Mary and Esther as they grow in the LORD. Pray for Sofia and Mina’s salvation and for further contacts with them.

This afternoon I shall be visiting Eva who is a holocaust survivor.

Please pray for Dan and Val’s need for monthly support and that they may be able to return soon.

Praise GOD for each of you. May HE richly bless you as you serve HIM in 2010.

Last week was a full week of ministry with 10 meetings or Bible studies, in addition to our Sunday morning services. Last Sunday there were 26 in our services, and 25 this week. We are making new friends every week. Our morning fellowship starts with at least 1/2 hour of prayer. Today the prayer time was closer to 45 minutes. For a group our size, we seem to have an inordinate amount of trauma within the fellowship membership. At the same time, our little fellowship is learning to love one another and to share one another’s burdens. Our prayer time indicates this. We are gearing up for our annual International Thanksgiving Dinner. This year we plan on having two dinners, with fifty people at each dinner. The goal of these dinners is to show the love of God and to generate evangelistic relationships/Bible studies. Our whole fellowship will need to be totally involved in order for us to meet our goals, and we need you to pray for us daily.

The highlight of this week was the Friday night Bible study. One of our disciples, who came to faith and was baptized in our ministry, initiated this study. It is held in a study room at the Snell Library of the Northeastern University campus. We are reading through the book of Matthew together. This last week there were five of us in the study. It was a tremendous joy hearing our disciple explain to the new Bible study attendees how to find chapter and verses in the Bible and to observe him direct the study. One can almost see him, one day, pastoring a church in the country from which he came. There was also a major disappointment this week, one of our early disciples as decided to abandon the Lord.

I am having a slight physical problem. Driving too much and/or working long hours causes my stomach to hurt. This is an old problem and I understand what causes it. But I need to work long hours, and I need my stomach to quit hurting. Please pray for me. The burden of the city is great and the work that needs to be done, momentous. We thank God that we are thus engaged.

Parents need time away from their kids.

Parent Time Away is a ministry that is put on by our Middle Schoolers of the church that grew out of a desire to serve. Babysitting is provided at the church by the students for $1 per child giving parents a chance to take a much needed night off and relax.

PTA is Friday, November 20th from 6pm-9pm at the church. Cost is $1 per child for kids infant – 5th grade.

We had a very busy day today packing up our container. All of our earthly possessions left on a semi to Kansas City where it will get on a train to New York to get on a boat to Brazil. Hopefully in 6-8 weeks we will get it. Seeing the truck drive away helped us to realize that this is really happening. It is crazy to think that this time next week, Lord willing, we will be boarding a plane in Miami for Porto Alegre. The “roller coaster” is just beginning to reach the top of the first hill…. hang on!!!!

August is vacation month in Portugal. By law, all full-time, contracted workers must be paid 14 months salary each year. Yes, you read that correctly. It was not a typo. Twice a year, in November and in August Portuguese workers receive a subsidy check = to one months salary. They often use the November check for Christmas and the August check for vacation. Four weeks vacation per year is also the norm. It is difficult to plan ministry activities during this month because so many people are vacationing. This significantly affects church attendance and means it is sometimes difficult to find enough teachers, preachers and personnel for other church responsibilities. Along with his usual responsibilities as grass cutter, sound technician and worship team member, Cal has been standing in the gap during the last three Sundays by teaching adult Sunday School. During our eight years ministering in Portugal this is the first time that he has taught in Portuguese. He taught an overview of Paul’s 13 epistles. It was quite a challenge to prepare and present his lessons, however, with some help and patience on the part of the students, he did a good job. God was honored and those who were not on vacation, walked away with a booklet to which they can refer in the future as they study these books on their own. His love of teaching and sharing God’s Truth helped him through the language challenges.

Some time this week, Phil Schlener along with his youngest three children, Austin, Louisa and Matthew will arrive. Because of his retired military status, they are flying into Spain “Space A”(space available) and will arrive whenever their is a flight that has room for all of them. Please pray for them as they return to ministry here without Elena who went home to be with the Lord last December. Phil will teach secondary English and Spanish. Next Sunday Mike and Nancy Dubois will arrive with their two daughters, Nina and Katiana. They will move into an apartment right next door to us. Nancy will teach First and Second grades and Mike will teach secondary Social Studies and Physical Education classes. On Tuesday of that same week, Meredith Peters, our only single teacher this year, will arrive. Meredith will be teaching Third and Fourth grades. On September 1st Eldon and Margie Hereld and their daughter, Sari Anne, will arrive. Margie will be teaching kindergarten 3 days a week and Elden will teach Fifth and Sixth grades. In addition to these families, Nick Rachevsky, who moved to Portugal with his wife and baby last August, will teach secondary Math, Computers, and French. Jeff Thomas, one of our church planting missionaries, will teach secondary Bible again for us this year. Cal will complete the teaching staff by covering the secondary Science classes. Once again we are amazed at God’s goodness in burdening these teachers with the needs here in Portugal and providing the support for them to come minister with us.

The theme we have chosen for the upcoming school year, “In Christ we can” is taken from Philippians 4:13. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Will you pray with us that our staff and students will learn to focus (corporately and individually) on the cross and the strength that Christ gives us to do His will and walk in His ways. Pray too for our incoming students. We will have at least 7 new students this year and approximately 30 other returning students.

Thanks for all of your prayers. This has been an exciting, exhausting and encouraging month. This is a quick note on all that we have asked you to pray about during this critical month. Easter opens the door to communicate to others about what we believe as Christians. Parades in the city, editorials in key newspapers, special services at church, and everything that comes with this month allows for open dialogue on Jesus. With your prayers and support, you are part of this process and we are grateful for you. There is quite a bit to share this month, so this note will be longer than our normal updates. Thanks for taking the time to celebrate with us and pondering the privilege it is for us to be part of this amazing ministry.

Easter

At City Bible Forum and Glorious Hope Baptist, we had many different events throughout the city. City Bible Forum had our talks on during the week and many new people coming along to ask the tough questions about the Bible and Jesus. We work with many different groups from all over city to have evangelistic events within corporations. We assist with the preparation, the talks and communication. The goal of the events are to give people opportunity to come to effective and timely follow up and we assist in teaching these classes called Investigating Christianity. One of Sydney’s largest banks allowed a group within the firm to run not one but four events. This bank is going through very difficult times of redundancies (mass firings), mergers and reorganisation. You would not think this is not an ideal time to be planning evangelistic events, but the result shows that God can do an amazing work all of the time. Inside this bank, we had over 100+ people come to the various events, with upwards of 40+ signed up for courses on finding out more about Christianity.

Church events: We had special services on Friday and Sunday. Russ had the opportunity to preach on Good Friday. He taught through 23-24 Luke and the witnesses throughout the death, burial and resurrection of our Saviour. Many people were challenged to know the Lord and communicate to others about what He is doing in the lives of the people of the church.

Fireproof

Great film, great conversation and great results.

Many of you may have seen this film in the US, but it was not shown in theatres in Australia. After seeing the film, the Urban Fight Club (Men’s’ ministry) committed to have a professional showing of this film for the people of our community. It reflected two of our key values, fighting for our faith and for the family. It was quite a bit of work, but it was worth it. Our goal was to get the non-Christian spouses of our church members to come to this great film. So, we were originally thinking a small group of people on a Friday night. Well, God had different plans. We started giving out tickets and the numbers grew steadily every week and on the night we had over 60 people come to the evening with close to half being visitors. Many atheists, non-Christians, skeptics, single adults and married couples came to the showing of Fireproof. We had good food, nice venue (not at the church) and a good quality film. Explaining to the crowd it has a Christian message, insight into marriage and that it was good entertainment value. After the movie, claps and cheers, but the best part was most people turned their chairs around and started talking. Asking questions and discussing the film. Some complaints from the atheists, but they were impressed with the quality of the event. As a pre-evangelistic event, it was perfect to plant the seeds and for our group to effectively meet with many non-Christian men who would not come to our church in the past. Pray for many of these families and lives of these men.

The Face of Suffering

During this difficult economic time in world history, many people have questions. Where is God? If he does exist, how could he allow things like this to happen? Is he even listening?

During this month it is school holidays in New South Wales (year round school in Australia) and many people are out of the city. CBF is usually at its lowest attendance, but not this year. We had a series delivered by Justin Moffat, ‘The Face of Suffering’ -Three things you can do with God in the face of suffering. Wrestle, Wait and Rely- based out of the book of Habakkuk. (I know not your typical Easter passage, but doesn’t the entire Bible point to Jesus?) What a great series and many people coming along to ask some of the hard questions, also, getting the answers. Again seeing how even the Minor Prophets point us to the redemptive message of Jesus.

Prayer requests:

1. Ladies outreach in the community around Glorious Hope Baptist.

2. Working through the growing pains of a church plant.

3. Thinking through the growth of the church and how to effectively minister within our community.

4. Investigating Christianity courses in the city.

5. Furlough details for 2010

Thanks for hanging in there and reading through this update. It is amazing to see what God is doing in this city. Thanks for your support and prayers.

S-Games Winter Carnival

It might be cold outside, but inside, we are having a party!

Shine Children’s Ministry is holding a special S-Games Winter Carnival on Sunday, February 15th from 5:30-7:30pm. Kids should come prepared for tons of fun!

Parents, please remember that you will need to dress your kids for fun and games this night.

New Women’s Bible Study

Our new women’s Bible study will begin Monday, February 23, at 9AM. Our purpose is not to give you “five easy steps to perfect children” (they don’t exist!) but to encourage young moms as they seek to raise their children in “the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”

**If finding care for your child/children while you attend this study is a concern please indicate your needs when you sign up. We do have limited space for those unable to find their own childcare.**

Happy New Year! How were your Holidays? Please write and tell us of some of your special events. We would love to hear about them. We are currently taking a one week break from the action. We arrived at a very small beach motel about five hours south of Bangkok on Monday. We were hoping for some relaxation and some sun, but the temperatures have been unusually cold this year. It has been dropping down to the low 60’s every evening here, and not rising to 80 degrees during the day. So here we are at our beach vacation wearing long sleeves . . . no kidding. We will happily settle for the relaxation.

Well, we moved into our new house and church on January 2. The construction portion of the work on the building is about 2/3 done, but since our lease on our apartment expired on January 4 we had no choice but to move in. The first week in our house we had no windows on the back side of the building . . . lots of mosquitoes. Once the windows were installed, we were able to get out of town for a few days.

Our Holidays were quite different than in years past. We spent just about every waking moment cleaning and painting our house and church. On Christmas Day, Nate was asked by a friend to go to a small elementary
school and explain the true meaning of Christmas. It was a great opportunity to plant seed in a new field. He left the house at 6 AM and arrived back home at 2:30 PM. We let the kids open their presents at about 3:30 PM, and then Nate slept for the rest of the day. The following day we were back at painting the building. New Years Day was spent painting and cleaning the building as we moved in on January 2.

Although our Holidays were not filled with all kinds of activities, it was a good time to do the work on the building. Bangkok emptied out around New Years, so there was no traffic when we moved. Also this year
our winter time has been unusually cool, which has been great for when we were working. Praise the Lord for those blessings.

We still have our minds set on opening the doors for ministry in February. Please pray to that end with us. We are so thankful that God has brought in some of the funds needed for the construction. There is
still significant work to be done, and we will continue to move forward as God provides the funds. We will likely open the doors for ministry before the work is finished, so February is reasonable.

While we do the work of getting ready to open our church for ministry, we do have some other ministry opportunities for which we ask for prayer. Every Tuesday evening, during the month of February, Nate will be
teaching at a Bible institute at one of our sister churches. Also every Wednesday from now until the beginning of April, Nate and Maam will have the opportunity to go inside two prisons and teach English and Bible to the Thai prisoners. This is the ministry of another missionary, and we are helping him out for a couple of months as he takes a short furlough. Pray for these opportunities, that God’s Word will go forth with power,
and that we would see some fruit from our labors.

Maam and the kids are doing great. As a personal testimony, I (Nate) am so thankful for Maam’s help during the construction process. I have no idea how things would have gone had Maam not been there to help every
step of the way. Her low key personality and her ability to stay calm when things were not done so well were a great testimony to all observers. Those qualities also encouraged me to do the same, as some of
you know that I can be somewhat excitable.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers. It has been an amazing year for our family. The opportunities for ministry continue to grow. We have had the privilege of seeing people come to Christ through the various ministries that we participated in this year. We hope that you are receiving our regular communications through our free RSS feed on our website, www.matthewsdownunder.com. Through the Lord’s will and your support we have been able to be a apart of this amazing work in Australia.

We committed to communicating our support levels to you twice a year. With all of the world economic challenges, Australia has been effected by the changes too. We have been very thankful for the continued support from all who have supported us regularly this year. With some of these adjustments we are currently close to our 100% support level, we are only experiencing a shortfall of $80 per month.

We appreciate consideration from you or your churches when evaluating your upcoming budget discussions.

On November 15th both Camilla and Gabriel were baptized on a very cold day, in a pond at the Rincão churh-plant along with five other people from the three churches. What a family celebration it was in the water after. There is nothing like baptizing your own kids. Thank you for your many prayers for our family. Both Gabriel and Camilla have clubs for their friends where they invite them over to play and have a snack with Bible study moments that they teach.

We met Eduardo and his family in 2007 during a storm while we sought shelter in the mountains near the Guarani tribe in Alto Caraá about 90 minutes from Gravataí. At that time we camped in his garage by the river and shared with him “The Story of Hope”. He put his trust in Jesus Christ in 2007 and we continued to visit his family in 2008 for discipleship through the chronological “Way to Joy” material. Pastor Geferson has taking the lead in this church-plant bringing the young Rincão church into their first missions outreach. In evangelism, we have learned to return to the simplicity the redemptive narrative in scripture where we have seen people like Eduardo trust Christ and be baptized in the face of family persecution for his faith.

After two local tattoo artist trusted Christ (also through the biblical narrative), they helped us put together a visual walk through the Story of Hope burnt into eight leather panels representing the chronological bridge to life from ABWE (God-Man-Sin-Death-Christ- Cross-Faith-Life). We have taken this to into public schools and seen dozens of children understand and respond with faith in Jesus.

Thank you Lord for 2008, please lead us into 2009 toward whatever adventure you have for us. Amen. The Latham’s

After a conference with the chaplain for the NRL (National Rugby League), we are building momentum for the ministry and the potential impact on western Sydney. After the meeting, the heads of the ministry have decided to postpone the event to February 2010.

Please be praying for specifics:

1. Commitment of Christian NRL players who will commit to participating in the event.

2. Youth groups and organizations will partner with the event to bring along attendees in the event.

3. Many young people would come into a relationship with Christ through this ministry.

Simeon’s gift: I will be speaking at City Bible Forum and PwC this year. The Evangelistic talk will be ‘Simeon’s gift: Joy in a joyless season.’ Based on the Luke 2 account of Jesus’ presentation at the temple. Please pray that many would come to the talks and here the story from the New Testament of anticipated gift that God promised Simeon, to see the Saviour. Then his response and gift of ‘Simeon’s song’ to Mary and Joseph.

Urban Fight Club Sunday: This Sunday will be the Sunday where the men take over the church. Our Men’s group (UFC) will be doing all of the work and service on Sunday. Serving the ladies and proclaiming the Word as men do. Exciting day and many friends and family will be visiting. Please pray for the men as they have this unique opportunity to serve and present the Gospel to the world.

‘Australia’ the movie: The movie has opened around the world. A campy, epic for this generation. We anticipate that many will come away amazed at the scenery, culture and beauty of this sunburned land. God has created a beautiful land, Down Under. Just a small warning for our supporters and friends. We hope that people do not come away from the film thinking that is today’s Australia. The film is based in Darwin and the outback. The reality of ministry in Australia is in the modern cities. We hope that if you do see the film, that you come on holiday (vacation) to see the land depicted in the film. (That is the desire of the Australian tourism board.) Please go to the Northern Territory and Queensland and enjoy the outback. (Australia could use a boost in tourism.) If you come away from the film and want to come to experience the ministry of Australia, it is nothing like the film. The ministry is in the city, no kangaroos, Aborigines, or vast plains. So, not to dampen your mood after seeing th film, just a small reality check. Come ready to work in the city with people from all over the world. As many who have come before, there are not many times for riding horses, seeing kangas or traveling across the outback. Please pray for our ministry in Australia in the urban jungle, not the fictitious land of ‘The Drover.’ It is an amazing land, amazing opportunities for sharing the Gospel and an amazing open door into taking His Word to the world. (Just a small caveat, we do have a limited number of spots per year for coming to Oz and there is an approval process. So, make sure if it is something your church is planning, contact us early and we can work you through the process.)

We are still amazed at what God had planned for Wee Ones Care and Share this year. We had no idea, but are so thankful He did! During the event there were 17 individuals that made decisions to accept Jesus into their hearts. Praise the Lord! This included fathers, a Hope ministries social worker that just drove someone here, many Mothers and even Grandparents. In addition to these there were another 37 that indicated they were interested in bible studies or learning more about God’s grace and the love his son has for them. In all, we served 188 unique families and 586 total people (children, grandparents, parents and family members). To think, we were praying for 100 women to attend, ye of little faith!

This year 5 churches and hundreds of volunteers came together to do our little part in reaching out to those in need. Wee Ones doesn’t end here. As you can imagine with that many attendees we ran out of a few things. Below is a list of specific requests from mothers who came later in the day, after many of the items were gone. If you are interested in donating a new or used item from the list below please leave it in the Church office.

Another way that you can still help with Wee Ones is to make a commitment to mentor a family/mother throughout the year. This could mean a variety of unpredictable things. For example, they may want to go through a bible study, they may need a ride to church or they may just need a solid spiritual influence in their lives. If you are interested in becoming a mentor please call me directly at 515-778-5967 as soon as possible. Lastly, please pray for all the mentors that will be calling on these Mother’s and Families. Pray hearts will be opened, relationships will be built and that it will all be done to God’s Glory.

Thank you to the hundreds of hands that made this outreach ministry possible. A special thank you to the committee members that put in so many hours throughout the year to make this possible, to those people that helped with picking up items week after week, to those that prepared all the food for the event and to those that spent hours in prayer for the event. Thank you to those that refused to take a lunch break because there were Mom’s still in line, to the men who loaded car after car and to everyone working together to quickly move families through the event. We could continue to say thank you to so many more people… thank you and know you have made a difference in someone’s life through Wee Ones.

It’s been said that, “More isn’t always better; sometimes it’s just more.” This is true, of course, but even if it’s not an indicator of “better”, sometimes it’s still a good thing – something in which we can rejoice!

Other “good things” would include a great European EBM conference in Wagrain, Austria August 25-29 (picture was taken that week 1,991 meters up the Alps). Also, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the Euro is dropping . . . rapidly! Erin Indovina, the intern currently with us from Purdue University, has been keeping close track of the Euro since she arrived in Berlin on July 15th. The Euro has dropped 17 cents since the middle of July – from $1.58 to $1.41!! For a missionary paid in dollars living on the Euro, this is a good thing!

I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.

For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless (Philemon 1:6; Psalm 84:11).

I’m sending this e-mail to you to prompt you to praise God with us for last week AND to pray with us for this week! Tomorrow (Tuesday) starts our Teen Camp. 23 teenagers have pre-registered. This is already five more than attended last summer, and I have heard of others that are thinking of coming. A team from my supporting church in Montrose, PA arrived Saturday morning and is geared up to help run the teen camp. Please pray with us this week! I know that God has GREAT things in store for all involved!!!! Here are a few prayer requests that I shared with our church on Sunday in preparation for the teen camp:

* Health, strength and creative energy for all involved in running the camp
* The hearts of the 20+ teens that have pre-registered
* Salvation and/or spiritual growth for all who attend!
* Teens to enjoy camp and invite their friends
* Equipment to work properly (ie. musical instruments, technology)
* Growth of CrossWay’s youth group as a result of the camp

God is good and has taken both Christie and I on a journey these past several months that was unexpected and life changing in many ways. One way in Christie’s life is that both girls, Redeemed and Naomi, will be coming and and visiting her and her family for 6 months. I know that I forwarded the e-mail that Christie and her mom sent out and God has been using many people to answer the prayer for the money needed to purchase the 2 tickets for the girls. We still need about $600 more dollars before we are able to purchase the tickets. This has been a faith journey all the way and we want to trust God that He will provide this last bit of money. From the beginning of this trip, God cleared both our paths. It’s been truly amazing to see how God has proven that He can and will provide for His children. Especially the ones that are orphaned. We flew on His wings through all the appointments with the girls….passports, birth certificates, visas, and now the tickets. We have the tickets booked for the 19th of this month, which is this coming Sunday. Thanks to my mom and Mrs. Bigelow we are almost sure we will all be flying together. The best way I can think of to end the trip that Christie and I have been on these past months together…

Thank-you for your prayers and support. I know that my “family” extends to each and every one of you and I thank God for that. I look forward to seeing you all soon….it’s hard to even believe that soon means only a week.

“Lest You Be Consumed” – The Tragedy in Minneapolis

I know I said that I would try and write sooner, but I’m sure none of you thought this soon. I try not to be too predictable…:) Christie and I had some letter’s that needed to be typed out before our meeting at the Embassy. My parent’s keep asking me how travel in rainy season is going, and up until today it had been going fine. I guess these past couple months the rains been just teasing us, but it’s getting serious about it’s work as of these past couple days. Our usual walk to the Market where we catch a bus was completely flooded. (Water up to our waist on our usual bridge crossing. Christie and i didn’t feel like wading through it since rumor has it a Boa snake and Croc often are seen fighting there…i can just see it…one month to go and i get eaten by a croc!…) We had to turn back, thinking our trip to town was over, but thankfully we caught a motor bike that took us to the bus junction. That ride consisted of getting off a couple times and wading through muddy water for a while. We knew we lived out in the bush, but now with transportation getting harder with the weather we are really feeling it. I guess all that is to say please pray that the rain won’t detour the big steps we have these next couple weeks. In the States it would be no problem, but here it’s a different matter. Monday and Tuesday it’s very important for us to be able to reach town…but God is all knowing and everything will work out in His perfect plan. We are trying to get everything ready for the meetings and so far it’s going smoothly. Pray that the man who’s supposed to work on the birth certificates is doing his job. I will keep you all informed on our next steps.

I’m at a loss on how to catch you all up on the last events of the past couple months. The Lord has been faithful in so many ways and I know that is through the prayers of all of you. This e-mail is going to have to be brief, but I do want to be able to write soon and tell you all that is and has been on my heart.

Christie and I both have been on a journey these past serveral months…almost six as of now. We have experienced things that both of us hadn’t planned on..but thankfully God had. I know I was vague in my last e-mail on everthing that was going on at Dixville, and this e-mail probably won’t be any clearer, but I’m writing for a specific purpose and that is prayer. Christie and I wouldn’t be where we are right now if it weren’t for God and for all of your prayers. Pastor Mike (PM) is not acting as Director of the orphanage now. Praise God. ACFI wasn’t able to take legal action because there wasn’t any proof. We went to the Doctor 11 days after it had happened and by that time it was too late to get any proof, and all that the Doctor was able to say was that there was evidence that she had been raped. ACFI has been through a trying last few months, but I think God has placed some people that will be good staff. Alot of changes are taking place and I know God is doing a work.

Along with this e-mail, I am going to forward one that Christie sent out a few weeks ago. As you will read, God has put a special love in Christie’s heart for a particualar girl at the home, Redeemed. Christie was really trying to hear God’s voice in it and felt that God was speaking to her to have more of an impact in her life than just an acquointance for a few months. She is bordering the line of being too old to adopt, and so these past few months we’ve been trying to seek out different options. We are trying to get her a Visitor’s Visa and it’s amazing how God opened the door to pursue this avenue. The thing is we are against a time dead line. We are trying to get birth certificates done this week. (Also for another girl, Naomi) We have to have them done by Monday in order to get a passport. Our Visa appointment with both girls is this coming Tuesday. We are supposed to have both the birth certificate as well as the passport by then! With God all things are possible. We do have a secondary appointment at the Embassy just in case we don’t get the passports on time. The lady, Marcey, who want to help us with the Visa’s, is leaving at the end of this month. Please pray that we will be able to get everything worked out with her on this end before she leaves. It will be nothing short of a miracle if Redeemed is on the flight home with us. Pray for God’s favor in this. Continual favor from God, the Embassy, ACFI…etc..
God has done a work already in this trip and I know that He can do anything. The Visa interview dates will either be on the 19th of the 23rd of this month.

There is so much to say and I wish I could explain the whole situation to all of you in person instead of over e-mail. I will be able to soon!
